Out-of-This-World Crab Lunch at Port Klang

Posted on 04/14/2011

Second day in Kuala Lumpur and our plan was to visit Port Klang for crab lunch. Unknown to me, the crab dishes produced by Port Klang seafood restaurants are at the top of the wish-list for Malaysians and Singaporeans. I had no idea what kind of a treat I was in for, but my hopes were high!

This half-day eating-tour began at KTM Kommuter Central Train Station in K.L. The trip to Port Klang takes a little over an hour.

Arriving mid-morning, I was eagerly looking forward to mind-blowingly excellent chile crab.

After disembarking from the commuter train, we caught a taxi to our first restaurant, Sea-Sky Seafood Restaurant. This place obviously caters to large volumes of people as evidenced by the ample parking lot and inside the size of dining hall.

Garnishing the wrought iron arch at the entrance are two representations of Mantis Prawn. "Salamat Datang." "Welcome." This place has style!

At the front entrance are holding tanks for soon-to-be consumed live fish and prawns. The tanks are labeled with the type of seafood along with the price in Malaysian Ringgit. I noticed that there are two prices for the mantis prawn. Is the MR10 for more than one-day-old? While the MR22 is for freshly caught that day? I wouldn't doubt it...

The dining area is a large, spacious hall. There are no windows facing the water, only open railing running the width of the building. Adding even more amazement to this 'house of the sea' is a small jetty from which boats can disembark passengers into the restaurant! Now that is style!

Another view. The small jetty can be seen at the far end of this photo.

As our order was being prepared, I took shots of passing vessels plying their trade along the waters of the Straits of Malacca. The island of Klang, Pulau Klang is seen as the wooded area across the way. Pink tugboat? Cool.

The kitchen is rather small (I thought) for the size of this place, but I guess quality over quantity here! since we arrived at 11:00 a.m. on a weekday, the place was empty.

The captain sat with Dominic for awhile and they agreed that the Sweet Sour Chile Crab would be the perfect dish to try. I had tried Singaporean Chile Crab before, but never its sweet sour Malaysian cousin. Eager anticipation set in as I sipped on 100 Plus drink...

The drink. A refreshing soda beverage reminiscent of Fresca with a hint of Pocari Sweat. Just another moment in paradise!

Lunch is served. The crab didn't take awfully long to arrive at the table, but when it did - my hungry eyes were almost filled with tears as to the color of the sweet sour chile crab, the aroma of crab meat shimmering with spicy red sauce. (I forgot to take pictures of the menu and I forget the price of this dish, sorry)

The scent of fresh bread was also a surprise (for me). I wasn't expecting this, but in hindsight I should have known we would be eating chile crab with white bread. At least it was good quality French loaf rather than that Wonderbread stuff some people get. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

When I think of the best crab I have ever eaten, this dish will come to mind first. As I tore into this hard-shelled crab and tasted the sweet, sweet meat along with the heavenly concocted special sweet sour chile sauce, my highest ambitions for what to expect of Port Klang seafood were overshadowed by this very presentation. The thick, warm, fragrant slices of French bread were the perfect accompaniment as the fluffy yet substantial baked starch soaked up the delicious sauce.

I cannot adequately describe how good this dish was! Only the following photo of me licking my fingers can do it justice!

Oh my God! How I love thee! There was a Catholic religious sister I knew once who told me that Heaven has real food for our Resurrected Bodies. I remember thinking "what kind of dishes? Like Chinese?" Funny, this Sweet Sour Chile Crab seems to be a heavenly dish. Oh yes indeed...

After eating a whole crab with bread, I was sort of looking to take in the sights of Klang, but Dominic said there isn't much to see here. I'm sure that was his way of suggesting that there wasn't enough time to sight-see and instead head on over to another seafood restaurant for another crab preparation. And sure enough, after talking to the cabbie in Malay, we ended up here. Another seafood restaurant nestled unobtrusively in an industrial park.

We walked past a two-storey building that is part of the restaurant.

Then into the front entrance where no space is wasted with meaningless adornments, just plastic tables and plastic chairs with pink napkins folded into plastic cups.

It must have been around 2:00 in the afternoon when we arrived. Staff were lazily going around setting tables. There were a handful of customers scattered about as well. Interestingly, this restaurant has little pavilions with one table and eight chairs underneath. Walkways connect the pavilions with the rest of the restaurant complex and to the kitchen. I can only imagine what a sight this place must be on a busy weekend!

Teo Chew style oyster omelette MR8.

A classic dish that was ordered merely as some variety to the second crab we were about to eat.

Black Pepper Crab 1.5 kilo MR45.

Out-of-this-world! Is all I can say about this crab dish. This was my first time eating this preparation and wow, wow, wow!!! If you are ever in Kuala Lumpur, take the day trip out to Port Klang to try this delectable delight! I can't wait to go back one day and have this again, preferrably with a larger group of people.
